Jordan Henderson hits out at Matt Hancock over 'cheap shot'

Jordan Henderson has hit out at former Health Secretary Matt Hancock over a "cheap shot" comment he made during lockdown.

The Liverpool FC captain, 32, quickly set up a fund for NHS workers after the covid pandemic hit the UK back in March 2020. Henderson has since said it is "an honour" to be able to "give back".

Wheels were in motion for his NHS fund project when Mr Hancock called for millionaire footballers to take pay cuts during the first lockdown.

Speaking to Beth Rigby on Sky News, Henderson called out Mr Hancock's "cheap shot" comment. Beth said: "I wanted to ask you about pandemic because you set up money for the NHS during covid.

"The players together campaign, I don’t know how much it ended raising. It was an incredible thing to do. The then Health Secretary Matt Hancock, said around that time that footballers should take a pay cut and play their part.

"Did you think it was a bit of cheap shot from Hancock or are you just like 'I’m doing my thing. Don't care what you say'?"

He replied: "Yes, it was a cheap shot, I don't know why, what the reason was if it was to deflect away from the pressure that he was under, but again for us, we were already in the process of doing stuff.

"We felt the responsibility of a group of players across the league, we were in a privileged position, we can really help, and we all got together all the captains got together."
