STORRS, Conn. — The much anticipated return of Jordan Hawkins went perfectly according to plan on Friday night as his career-high scoring display led the No. 25-ranked UConn men’s basketball team to their fourth win of the season, 86-50 over UNC Wilmington.
After a turnover on the first possession of the game, Hawkins — out for the last two games after hitting his head on the court 10 minutes into the season-opener — drew a charge on the other end. Five minutes in, Tristen Newton, coming off a triple-double against Buffalo, drove toward the paint and found the sophomore shooter wide open in the corner. Hawkins, nothing but net, recorded his first three points of the season.
Hawkins played 25 minutes and finished with 20 points, besting his previous career-high of 16 which came in a double-overtime game against Auburn in last year’s Battle 4 Atlantis. He made 7 of 13 from the field and 5 of 8 from deep.
