When Jonathan Allen speaks, everyone listens. The Pro Bowl defensive tackle and longtime captain of the Washington Commanders is respected on the field and in the locker room.
And in seven NFL seasons, as he mentioned two weeks ago, he’s seen a lot. The Commanders have undergone three name changes, multiple coaching changes, a new owner and too many quarterback changes to keep up with.
But after Washington’s 20-17 win over the New England Patriots, Allen spoke to the media afterward and was asked about current quarterback Sam Howell.
“Again, Sam Howell, is like, he’s our future,” Allen said. “He’s our quarterback, and I think we found our next quarterback for the next 5-10 years, and I truly believe that.”

Allen was then asked why he believed Sam Howell was the future.
“When I look at the plays he makes on the field — and not only does he make great plays on the field, his demeanor after bad plays and not playing well, he’s always able to bounce back. I’ve seen a lot of great quarterbacks in my time, played against a lot of them, and I think he has the potential to be one of them. I can truly say this team is behind Sam Howell 100%.”
The captain has spoken. Allen, along with Washington’s other leader, Terry McLaurin, have made it clear they believe in Howell.
