Jon McLaughlin handed Rangers 'no man's land' verdict as pundit gives scathing review on two moments

The Rangers goalkeeping situation has sparked some debate in recent weeks with Allan McGregor and Jon McLaughlin rotated by Michael Beale.

The Ibrox boss stated at the weekend when recalling veteran McGregor that he was his No1 goalkeeper but decided to call upon McLaughlin once again in the Premiership against Kilmarnock, like he had done in the previous outing against Dundee United. Part of his thinking may have come down to set-plays and crosses into the box with coming and commanding his area one of the 35-year-old's strengths.

However, he was caught out badly for Kilmarnock's opener from Chris Stokes and should have been punished before that sixth minute header. Former Rangers defender Richard Foster hit out at the former Hearts goalie for being caught in 'absolutely no man's land' on two occasions despite his ability at crosses being the main reason behind his selection.

He went on to settle and recapture his nerve as the game went on but the two key incidents in the opening exchanges were highlighted by Foster, with McLaughlin coming under scrutiny.

Speaking on BBC Sportscene about Kilmarnock's set pieces, the pundit said: "It seems like they targeted the area in front of [Borna] Barisic, there's a lot of space.

"McLaughlin is in the team because he's better at coming for crosses, but on two occasions he's caught in absolutely no man's land. Gets his position all wrong, starting position's wrong.

"He doesn't attack the ball well enough, he could've conceded a goal moments before from Ash Taylor. He gets himself stuck behind the defenders, it's an in-swinging corner.

"He should probably be two yards off his line and then when he gets the flight of the ball, he can actually run in front of the two defenders. He ends up running behind them and he's got no chance of getting the ball."
