Jon Favreau says Martin Scorsese did a "lot of improv" on Star Wars movie The Mandalorian and Grogu: "It's a highlight"

Martin Scorsese is heading to a galaxy far, far away in new Star Wars movie The Mandalorian and Grogu. He's playing an Ardennian who owns a food truck – and according to director Jon Favreau, he brought a lot of improv to the role.

"He did a lot of improv, he was just a lot of fun," Favreau told Fandango. "It's interesting because when the director is on their set, they're running the show, but I find when directors are on other people's sets, they just want to play and have fun, and he just had a great time. It was a once in a lifetime thing for me."

Favreau went on to share a bit more about how great the Oscar-winning director is at improv. "Oh he's great, he's hilarious – and the type of character, we gave him room to do his thing," he added. "It really plays into his performance style and the animators and creature designers really leaned into it so it's one of the highlights of the film for me."

He'll be playing an Ardennian in the movie, which is the same species that Favreau himself played in Solo: A Star Wars Movie. The director couldn't resist adding a connection between the two as well, revealing that he gave characters the same last name. "So our characters are related in theory," he added.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is released on May 22, 2026. For more from a galaxy far, far away, we've also rounded up all the upcoming Star Wars shows and movies you need to know about.
