'Joker: Folie à Deux' has officially been rated R by the Motion Picture Association, as announced on Wednesday. The highly anticipated musical sequel to the 2019 hit 'Joker,' starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, has received an R rating for 'some strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality and brief full nudity,' according to the MPA's latest ratings bulletin.
Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, the original 'Joker' film was also rated R for 'strong bloody violence, disturbing behavior, language and brief sexual images.' Directed by Todd Phillips, 'Joker: Folie à Deux' features Phoenix reprising his role as the iconic character, with Gaga joining the cast as his enigmatic partner Harley Quinn. The star-studded ensemble also includes Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener, and Brendan Gleeson.
While specific plot details remain shrouded in secrecy, it has been exclusively revealed by Variety that the film will predominantly be a jukebox musical, incorporating around 15 reimagined versions of popular songs. Among these musical numbers is a rendition of 'That's Entertainment' from the classic 1953 musical 'The Band Wagon,' famously performed by Judy Garland. Additionally, a couple of original songs are expected to be featured on the soundtrack.
After its triumphant reception at the 2019 Venice Film Festival, the initial 'Joker' installment went on to amass over $1 billion in global box office earnings and dominated the 2020 Oscars with an impressive 11 nominations. Phoenix clinched the coveted best actor Oscar for his compelling portrayal of Arthur Fleck, alias the Joker. Gaga, a versatile talent, has seamlessly transitioned into the realm of cinema, delivering standout performances in acclaimed films such as 'A Star Is Born' and 'House of Gucci.'
At the 2019 Oscars ceremony, Gaga garnered a best actress nomination for her role in 'A Star Is Born,' while the chart-topping track 'Shallow' from the same movie secured the award for best original song.
