Johnny Carson quietly left $156.5 million to his foundation after his 2005 death; by 2026, it was still funding Nebraska scholarships, arts and humanities

After his death on January 23, 2005, the foundation's directors knew a trust existed but had no clear sense of its size; they estimated its value at roughly one-tenth of what it eventually proved to be. According to Candid's Foundation Directory, the John W. Carson Foundation, which was created in 1981, was functioning over a period of more than two decades in the same manner as Carson himself, in that it was working discreetly by giving annual donations to children's charities and local organizations. It became known how much money was left by Carson in his last donation when the foundation filed Form 990-PF for fiscal year 2008.
