John 'Yogi' Hughes funeral draws Celtic legends and galaxy of football stars as Lisbon Lions say farewell

An array of footballing stars turned out to celebrate the life of Celtic legend John 'Yogi' Hughes on Friday.

The Parkhead icon passed away at the age of 79 on August 1 following a short battle with illness. The former striker scored 189 goals for the Hoops during his storied spell at the club between 1959 and 1971. In a poignant request, the Hughes family asked those in attendance to wear something green to mark Hughes' love of Celtic.

And there were many familiar faces who took the time to pay their respects including Lisbon Lion teammates John Clark, Bobby Lennox and Jim Craig. Current Celtic stars were also in attendance, with skipper Callum McGregor, Kyogo, Matt O'Riley and Carl Starfelt amongst those paying their respects alongside boss Ange Postecoglou. There were a number of notable speakers during the service including former teammate and friend John Craig who paid a glowing tribute to his great pal.

He spoke of years of friendship after meeting at just 15 years old before ending his fitting words saying: "Yogi was not just a Celtic legend, but a great man".

Yogi's son also stood up to share some memories as well as detailing exactly how his father wanted to be remembered. "He didn't want to be remembered for one goal or for one game. He just wanted it be know that he was a Celtic man. For Dad, being remembered as a Celtic man was the greatest imagination honour." He said.

Following a church service, the funeral cortege will make its way to Celtic Park around 1.45pm. where Hoops supporters will be provided the opportunity to honour the late, great Yogi.

The Parkhead club are also providing arrangements for fans who are unable to attend, with a broadcast of the service on their club channels to allow respects to be paid privately.
