Donnie Yen, who played Caine in John Wick 4, will soon be both starring in and directing his own spin-off movie – and, by the sounds of things, it will be pretty special.
"What drew me to Caine is the contradiction. He carries love, responsibility, and sacrifice in a world built on consequence. That creates a very different kind of action hero," Yen said in a statement, via Deadline.
"This film is an opportunity to push the genre forward," he continued. "My goal is to create the most definitive martial arts-infused action film ever made, one that honors what audiences love about John Wick while bringing a new emotional depth and visual language to the story. As both director and actor, I'm excited to shape this chapter in a way that reflects everything I've learned over decades in action cinema, while building something that feels entirely new."
Yen's action experience is seriously impressive, so it's no surprise that he's aiming big with his spin-off film. Per Deadline's report, the film will go into production in April.
The Batman 2 writer Mattson Tomlin co-wrote the screenplay with Michael McGrale, and, while story details are unknown for now, we do know that Rina Sawayama's Akira will be back. We last saw her in the John Wick 4 post-credits scene, seeking revenge on Caine after he killed her father.
