John Wayne Bobbitt reveals what caused his wife to cut off his penis after an argument

John Wayne Bobbitt became a household name back in 1993 when he awoke to find his wife Lorena Bobbitt had cut off his penis with a knife.

After the attack, Lorena drove to her her best friend Janna Biscutti's house with the severed penis in one hand and bloody knife in the other.

During the drive, Lorena threw the organ out of her car window and then stopped to call the police and tell them what she had done.

After a lengthy search, police found John's penis and rushed it to a hospital, where it was reattached during a nine-and-a-half hour surgery.

Now, 30 years on from the attack, John has shared his version of what sparked the "extraordinary" incident.

He admitted he still feels angry about what happened as he claimed Lorena, an Ecuadorian immigrant, had been using him to chase her American dream.

John, who was 26 at the time of the attack, told The Sun his then-wife became angry with him when he told her he wanted a divorce.

However, his mother convinced him not to separate from Lorena, who was 24 at at the time.

John claims "everything was fine" until he started working as a bouncer at a night club.

"Lorena didn’t like it because it involved working around women. She said she was going to spy on me. The night they opened was our fourth wedding anniversary," he said in a new interview.

John said two women came in to the nightclub, kissed him and gave him their phone numbers.

"Lorena knew because she was spying on me. When I got home she wasn't talking to me and she was mad," he said.

He claims to have called his friend to say he would be getting a divorce before telling Lorena he was leaving, however, she broke down in tears.

That night, John said he stayed at a hotel with a friend.

When he told Lorena, she "assumed I had been there with a girl."

Speaking to The Sun, John said: "She got a glass of water, picked up a knife and came back into the bedroom. She was sitting beside me saying, 'You hurt my feelings, you did it again and again and again'."

John claims that is when his wife attacked him.

Lorena has always maintained that she cut off her now-ex-husband's penis after he raped her, claims he denies.

Standing trial for wounding in 1993, the manicurist told the court she had been sexually and physically abused by John throughout their four-year marriage.

Since the incident, Lorena has set up a foundation which is dedicated to preventing domestic violence.

But when John arrived home from a drinking session with a friend, he climbed into his wife's bed, restrained her and forced himself into her, the court heard.

After the alleged rape, Lorena walked downstairs to compose herself before spotting a 12-inch knife sitting on the fridge.

"I cut off his penis because he abused me that much. That's what happens when a man pushes a woman so far and so low," she told jurors.

At trial, John insisted he'd been too tired to have sex with Lorena that night - although forensic evidence proved otherwise.

In the aftermath, John was charged with and found not guilty of marital sexual assault.

Lorena was also cleared at trial after court psychiatrist Dr Susan Fiester ruled she was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and had been in a state of temporary insanity.

As a condition of her insanity defence she had to complete five weeks at the psychiatric Central State Hospital in Petersburg, Virginia.

Speaking to The Sun, Lorena declined to comment on her ex-husband's claims and said she wouldn't be letting the incident "define who I am".
