The usual response to the sight of someone chugging a pint of beer is to cheer them on - but not for John Terry, who was booed as he downed the drink on stage with Luke Combs on Friday night.
The former Chelsea captain, 45, was the surprise guest who joined Combs during his first gig of his three-night residency in Wembley Stadium.
On Saturday, the 36-year-old American country singer brought out Clarkson’s Farm star Kaleb Cooper and former One Direction member Niall Horan to down beers during his hit song 1, 2 Many.
However, Cooper and Horan received a much warmer welcome from the crowd than Terry did.
As the professional football coach strode out on to the stage, hugged Combs and proceeded to chug his pint, resounding boos could be heard echoing around the stadium.
Nevertheless, Terry persisted and later kicked his can into the crowd while Combs tossed his own to his thousands of fans.
An Instagram account for Combs later shared a clip of the moment on his Instagram account and wrote in the caption: “And the kick is good! Shout out to John Terry for joining Luke Combs on stage at Wembley Stadium for night 1.”
One person who attended the gig left a comment and said: “I was there last night too and myself and everyone around me were super confused why [John Terry] was there... and the boos were so so loud - he must have felt so awkward!”
Another added that the booing “was immense” while a third claimed that “it was the loudest the stadium had been that night of everyone booing him”.
The former England captain is no stranger to controversy, and was most recently seen appearing very friendly with the equally controversial FIFA president Gianni Infantino at several World Cup games over the last couple of months.
Some of his biggest scandals included accusations of racial abuse against Anton Ferdinand, a defender for Queen’s Park Rangers, during a match in 2011 that led to a high-profile legal trial.
Terry was cleared in criminal court but was banned for four matches and fined £220,000 by the Football Association, which found him guilty following a four-day hearing. He was also stripped of England captaincy during this time.
About six years prior, Terry also faced allegations that he had an affair with the ex-girlfriend of his former friend and teammate, Wayne Bridge.
It was reported that Terry, who married his childhood sweetheart Toni Terry in 2007, began visiting Vanessa Perroncel at her and Bridge’s home after the couple broke up. Perroncel and Bridge share a son, Jaydon.
Although both Perroncel and Terry have always denied the allegations, with Perroncel describing Terry’s visits as purely based on “friendship”, the saga made headlines for many months.
The drama intensified after Bridge snubbed a handshake offered by Terry when Chelsea played against Manchester City in 2010 - a moment that lives on in football history.
