John Metchie is one of many premier receivers in the 2022 NFL Draft.
The Alabama product is coming off a season where he recorded 96 catches for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns. The biggest factor that will impede his draft stock is the fact he tore his ACL in the SEC Championship game.
He’s a gifted possession receiver and he was also a huge part of Alabama’s National Championship run when Mac Jones was at the helm. Metchie had 55 receptions for 916 yards and six touchdowns with Jones as his quarterback that season.
While talking with reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Metchie discussed the possibility of reuniting with Jones and playing for the New England Patriots.
“Mac and I are really close,” Metchie said. “He was my quarterback that year, so Mac and I got along really well. We spent a lot of time together my freshman year on the (second) team and stuff like that, so we have a lot of chemistry back there.”
Teams like the Cincinnati Bengals (Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase) and the Miami Dolphins (Tua Tagovailoa and Jaylen Waddle) have taken the approach of pairing up former teammates — Metchie discussed the recent trend.
“It’s definitely something I’ve heard, and especially seeing the trend of teams liking to unite quarterbacks and receivers or just former teammates together,” Metchie told reporters. “I think Mac-10 and I would be special together, for sure.”
He then detailed his meeting with the Patriots, saying things went pretty well.
“My meeting with the Patriots went really well,” he said. “We talked about Mac Jones, of course, (2021 second-round pick) Christian Barmore. They have a little group of Bama guys. The Patriots are really similar to Alabama as far as structure of team with Coach (Bill) Belichick over there and Coach (Nick) Saban at Alabama, so it was a good interview.”
