Reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa will likely hold out from the start of 49ers training camp as the two sides have not been able to agree upon a long-term extension ahead of the deadline, according to 49ers general manager John Lynch.
Because Bosa will be holding out from training camp, he will be fined $50,000 per every day he doesn’t show up to practice. Depending how long Bosa ends up holding out, this it could become a hefty penalty before he signs a lucrative contract.
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan added that he also doesn’t expect to see Bosa at practice until a deal is worked out, per NFL.com.
Bosa’s remarkable 2022 campaign saw him finish with a league-high 18.5 sacks. He also totaled 51 combined tackles and 48 quarterback hits. The fourth-year pro earned 94% of first-place votes on his way to winning his first career Defensive Player of the Year award. No player has more sacks over the last two seasons.
Heading into his fifth year in the league, Bosa currently has the fourth-best odds to repeat as Defensive Player of the Year, according to SI Sportsbook.
