John Gosden will decide who rides Inspiral following Frankie Dettori split

John Gosden will have the final say on who gets the leg-up on Inspiral in Friday's Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket.

Frankie Dettori has ridden the unbeaten filly in four of her five races so far including the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. Since then Gosden and Dettori have agreed to take a sabbatical following criticism of the jockey by the trainer over his rides on Saga and Stradivarius at the royal meeting.

Riding plans for Inspiral have yet to be decided but it will be the trainer who makes the final decision. Chris Richardson, representing owners Cheveley Park Stud, confirmed: “The decision will be made by John Gosden.”

Meanwhile, Richard Fahey hopes the watering continues at Newmarket to ensure that his crack sprinter Perfect Power lines up in Saturday’s Darley July Cup. The three-year-old heads the betting at 2-1 for the Group One after his blistering performance at Royal Ascot when taking the Commonwealth Cup.

The Malton trainer hinted last week that he may not run if the ground is firm. “Somebody walked the track and said it’s beautiful ground,” said Fahey. “We’ll keep an eye on it all week, you know. I just hope they shovel loads of water on.

“The horse will have a little breeze tomorrow morning and we will speak to the team and see what we think is the best. He’s in great form, absolutely bouncing.”

Christophe Soumillon, successful in last Saturday’s Coral-Eclipse on Vadeni, will as usual be in the saddle. Fahey remarked: “He’s a great horseman and good guy to have on your side.”

The first three home in the Platinum Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot are also expected to run. Charlie Appleby’s pair – Naval Crown (11-2 with Ladbrokes) and Creative Force (9-2) – who were first and second respectively and the Australian raider Artorius (7-2).

Connections of Artorius are not lacking confidence about the colt becoming the first Australian-trained winner of the six-furlong contest. Sam Freedman, the joint trainer with his father Anthony, said: “The stiffer the finish at Newmarket will be better for him as that is when he is doing his best.”
