John Cleese's Monty Python co-star shares concern over Fawlty Towers revival

A Monty Python star says she's amazed Fawlty Towers is being revived, hinting that John Cleese is too old at 83 to run a hotel.

Carol Cleveland appeared in 30 episodes of Monty Python's Flying Circus and all four of their films.

She said: "I'm amazed. I'm no spring chicken at 81. John is 83, which in reality would be too old to run a hotel.

"I can't see it matching the original, but maybe it's not meant to," she said, but added: "I'm delighted it's coming back and I can't wait to see it."

Cleese will write the sitcom and star alongside his daughter Camilla.

In the 70s original Torquay hotelier Basil Fawlty mocked Germans and abused Spanish waiter Manuel.

Carol, now enjoying semi-retirement in West Sussex, believes that the show might be very different this time.

She said: "It'll be interesting to see how John gets round today's political correctness. It might not be as fun if it's so politically correct."

The original show had aired on BBC Two from 1975 to 1979. It starred John as hotelier Basil Fawlty alongside Prunella Scales, now 90, who played his on-screen wife Sybil Fawlty.

Fawlty Towers followed the unfortunate exploits of the business owner and his wife as they attempted to keep both their hotel in Torquay as well as their marriage afloat.

It was announced earlier this month that the beloved sitcom will be revived, with John returning to write and star in the project alongside his daughter Camilla Cleese, 39.

The new series will reportedly explore how Basil navigates the modern world. It's been teased that it'll also see how Basil and his daughter team up to run a boutique hotel.
