John Caldwell: 11 arrested over attempted murder of police officer in Northern Ireland

Eleven people have been arrested over the attempted murder of a senior police officer in Northern Ireland earlier this year.

Nine men and two women aged between 21 and 72 years old were arrested under the Terrorism Act in Omagh and Coalisland in County Tyrone on Friday morning.

Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell was shot several times at a sports centre in Omagh in February.

Mr Caldwell, who had been critically ill at Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry, was left with life-changing injuries.

Two men, aged 28 and 70, were arrested last week in connection with the incident.

Mr Caldwell had been with his son after coaching a youth sports team when he was targeted.

Police believe the dissident republican group the New IRA was behind the attack.

At least 10 shots were fired during the attack, with two hitting vehicles in the car park.
