Darwin Nunez muddle goes on after new Liverpool transfer question asked

Liverpool maintained their momentum on Wednesday evening after overcoming West Ham United in the capital.

The Reds have now claimed three successive Premier League victories for only the second time this season, presenting the first-team squad with an outside chance of Champions League qualification.

Bringing the likes of Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz back into the fold following lengthy lay-offs has proved invaluable for Jurgen Klopp, who will be hoping his bolstered attacking options can continue to fire Liverpool up the table.

Tottenham Hotspur are next on the agenda, representing an opportunity to exploit the current struggles of the north London side. Looking ahead to Sunday's showdown at Anfield, four supporters have shared their views as part of the weekly ECHO fan column.

Rhys Buchanan (city centre, @Rhys_Buchanan) - No signs to suggest winning streak will be ended

After something of a resurgence following three wins on the bounce, the big question on everyone's lips now is just whether top four is possible for the Reds. It's something of a cliché, but we just need to keep doing our job. With a fully-fit frontline, I can't see any issues as to why this buoyant Liverpool side can't keep pushing on and grinding out the results.

Champions League football is out of our hands at this stage, but I'd happily take European football of any kind at Anfield next season. You needn’t look further back than our match with Borussia Dortmund in 2016 to see that even the Europa League can serve up memorable nights and magic moments. I just hope we can keep climbing come Sunday!

Andrew Cullen (Widnes, @brothersred5) - Matip performance raises transfer question

There has been a sea change in Liverpool’s performances over the last couple of weeks. We are now seeing impressive individual performances, increased intensity and energy in the team plus quality that can be introduced from off the bench.

Trent’s deployment into the midfield is settling and simmering nicely, and Jota is tracing his way back to his former form. What was perhaps surprising was Matip’s performance against West Ham. He was one of the players who seemed destined for the exit door, but Wednesday's display demonstrates his quality when fit. Liverpool fans, however, are right to question his longer-term prospects of remaining at the club given his injury record, which shows no sign of decelerating.

Nunez’s story this year has been a bit muddled. His raw talent, ferocious play and lightning speed has spread a smile on Liverpool faces, but he also raised some eyebrows with undercooked touches and clumsy play.

Consistency and momentum need to be our allies now for the rest of the season. As Spurs arrive at Anfield on Sunday, we need to make sure that we do not spurn the opportunity of inflicting more damage on a beleaguered Tottenham team.

David Shams (Washington D.C., @ShamsWriter) - Champions League place is still attainable

I’m sure it’s been tweeted already but, during any other period this season, it’s likely Liverpool drop points in the last two matches.

We do what we always do, and that is to fall victim to recency bias. I’ve waxed and waned through the whole season; mired in misery one moment before latching on to glimmers of hope the next. All based on the most recent result.

This season was always going to be a tough one and marked a fifth season of crazy football in a row. This campaign was broken up by a mid-season World Cup; 21/22 saw us playing every match; 20/21 behind closed doors; a title-winning season halted due to a pandemic; a league battle going down to the wire before winning in Madrid; reaching Kyiv in 17/18.

But there are signs of restoration, the pieces finally shifting into gear. With the six remaining matches, we can start to set the tone for next season. Finish strong and we just might pip a final Champions League spot, but I’m certain we’ll be content with the Europa League too.

James Noble (Worcestershire, @james_noble98) - Liverpool have restored key strength

It’s been a good week for Liverpool. That’s an enjoyable sentence to write, and one that this season has certainly reminded us not to take for granted. Simultaneously, we know it’s not something to rest on.

The Nottingham Forest and West Ham wins weren’t without their rough patches, by any means. In a sense, though, that made them feel additionally productive. As was the case against Arsenal and Leeds, the Reds responded well to setbacks.

Doing so has felt one of the team’s biggest strengths since Jürgen Klopp arrived. In 2022/23, though, that trait has seemed more evasive. The recent shift is uplifting and reflects a side with a greater sense of overarching assurance. That does, at least partly, feel linked to the recent tactical tweaks. Things appear more secure and coherent collectively, while there is also individual encouragement. Cody Gakpo’s goal on Wednesday – via Trent Alexander-Arnold’s latest assist – came within another intelligent showing, while Diogo Jota looks increasingly threatening and Mohamed Salah keeps breaking records.

With three home games in seven days now approaching, starting with Tottenham on Sunday, we have a chance to continue our upward momentum – in terms of performances, results and the table.
