Joel Glazer's summer promise is now more important than ever after Manchester United drew with Watford on Saturday afternoon.
United missed a number of gilt-edged opportunities, with Bruno Fernandes, Cristiano Ronaldo and Anthony Elanga all failing to break the deadlock.
Ralf Rangnick's men remain in the Champions League places but are just two points ahead of Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta's side holding three games in hand over United.
The respective summer arrivals of Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane saw United fans dreaming of a title tilt, though such dreams were soon shattered and they now face a battle to secure a place in next season's Champions League.
Shortly after sanctioning the signings of the aforementioned players, Glazer made a promise to the United fanbase.
"The most important thing is always on-the-pitch success," he said. "We can always improve. There’s always more work to be done."
Glazer was clearly adamant there was more work to be done at United, even after their stellar summer of transfer business, and so the team's performances this season will surely only have strengthened his view.
United are in need of a number of quality signings in the summer, with a top-class holding midfielder and a prolific goalscorer top of most fans' wish lists.
