Joe Shaughnessy set for shock St Mirren exit as clubs make move for benched Buddies skipper

Joe Shaughnessy could be set for a shock St Mirren exit. Clubs in Scotland and England are interested in the Buddies skipper and are looking to see if a deal can be done before the close of the window.

Interest has come to the fore after Shaughnessy was left on the bench for the weekend win at Dundee United. A number of clubs have already made contact with St Mirren and their head of recruitment Martin Foyle, who has been influential in their club’s summer signing drive, is now taking on those discussions.

St Mirren are unlikely to stand in Shaughnessy’s way if he can get the move he wants because he has been a good servant to the club and is at a stage in his career where he wants to be playing first-team football.

Manager Stephen Robinson went with Marcus Fraser, Declan Gallagher and Charles Dunne as his back three in the weekend victory at Tannadice. New signing Alex Gogic has also come in and although he can also play him as a midfielder, Robinson is likely to play him as a defender.

Shaughnessy’s game time is likely to be even more limited and St Mirren also need to look at balancing the books. The Buddies board have already handed Robinson the biggest playing budget of any St Mirren manager.

They were already over budget before they pushed the boat out to sign Gogic from Hibs as they look to see the club make a push for the top six and potential European football. The St Mirren board have made a big investment in revamping Robinson’s playing squad and also improving the general infrastructure and facilities at the club.
