Joe Lycett wanted to 'go to jail' for joke after audience member called police

Joe Lycett says he 'wanted to go to jail,' after an audience member at one of his shows was so offended by a joke that they called the police.

In a post that was widely shared on social media earlier this week, former Sewing Bee host Joe revealed that he'd been the subject of of a police investigation due to a complaint made by a far from impressed ticket holder. In a statement shared on his Twitter timeline, Joe wrote: "So someone came to my tour show a few weeks ago and was offended by one of the jokes. And their perfectly understandable response to this was...to call the f**king police."

He continued "To be fair to them, the fuzz were very nice about it all but felt they had a duty to investigate. This involved me writing a statement explaining the context of the joke for them; I particularly enjoyed putting the words 'giant donkey d**k,' into a message to a police detective.

"Charmed, and hopefully amused, the rozzers have since closed the matter. You'll be pleased to know that the joke - which I consider to be one of the best I've written written - remains firmly and proudly in the show."

At the end of the post, Joe joked the tour would continue if he 'wasn't jailed,' and talking about the attention the debacle has caused, whilst appearing as a guest on Friday's The One Show on BBC, Joe said he thought it was 'hilarious,' police were called, adding: "I wanted it to go to court, I wanted to be in jail for it. I think it’s so funny that the police got involved. It’s been great fun to watch it unfold."

Joe did admit he was shocked to find himself the focus of a police investigation, explaining: "Anything can happen when you’re performing to lots of people, everyone has different opinions.

"‘But, I did think it was quite extreme that the police were called because the joke in question is not, to me, it’s not offensive at all. I mean, it’s quite unusual, it’s quite a full-on thing to hear, but it’s not offensive to any group of people."

While not revealing the context or punchline of the gag in question, Joe teased: "‘It’s not racist, it’s not homophobic, obviously, it’s not misogynistic, it’s none of these things. It’s just silly."
