Joe Lycett says he 'wanted to go to jail' over standup joke on The One Show

Joe Lycett has said he "wanted to go to jail" over a standup joke that was investigated by police. The comedian, 33, told The One Show that he found it "hilarious" when officers called him up about the matter.

He revealed on social media on Tuesday (June 21) that the complaint had been made about a joke in his tour show "a few weeks back". Lycett said at the time that he had to write "a statement explaining the context of the joke" to officers and that the matter was now closed.

Speaking to presenters Alex Jones and Ronan Keating, he said: "I did think it was quite extreme that the police were called because the joke in question to me is not offensive at all. It's quite unusual – quite a full-on thing to hear – but it's not offensive to any group of people, it's not racist, homophobic or misogynistic.

"It's just silly. But I can also see how somebody up-tight would be a cross about it."

The comedian said that the police had since closed the matter. The joke remains "firmly and proudly" in his show, he added.

He told The One Show on Friday (June 24): "I found the whole thing so funny and when the police rang I thought it was hilarious. I wanted it to go to court – I wanted to go to jail for it.

"I just think it's so funny that the police got involved. So this week's been very funny to watch it all unfold."

Reacting to his appearance on the magazine show, viewer @Peter_H_Todd tweeted: "Absolutely love @joelycett. He's always superb on talk shows. You never know what he's going to say. Pure comedy legend."

@Tony47803704 posted: "Has he heard of perspective?".

@FacileTalk commented on his unseasonal attire and said: "Q - Is Joe not itchy in that jumper?"

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
