Joe Duffy steps out on same red carpet as Kin's Aidan Gillen after hitting out at RTE show

A star-studded red carpet event this week saw Joe Duffy cross paths with Kin star Aidan Gillen - after he launched a scathing attack on the RTE show when it hit screens last year.

The RTE Liveline presenter openly slated the crime series, which stars Gillen as the leading gangster, saying he takes great offence to crime dramas like Kin, and Love/Hate, which the actor also starred in.

He went on to claim that the shows ‘exploit’ real people’s lives - like his own growing up in Ballyfermot.

Months later, the pair were spotted posing on the same star studded red carpet in Dublin, to attend the world premiere of Irish acting legend Gabriel Byrne's Walking With Ghosts at the Gaiety Theatre.

Speaking on the night, Aidan, who played leading gang boss Frank Kinsella in the hit RTE crime series, said he still doesn’t know whether Kin will return for a second season.

“Officially, no,” he said, when asked if he had heard any news.

Over half a million people tuned into RTÉ One to watch the explosive finale, which saw Aidan’s character lying in a pool of blood, due to an overdose.

Remaining tight-lipped on the future of the show and his own role in it, the Game of Thrones star added he would “like to see more of everything”.

Irish acting legends Brendan Gleeson and Brenda Fricker were also among the crowd of well-known faces that attended the show on Tuesday night.

President Michael D. Higgins and RTE’s Brendan O’Connor, Marty Whelan and Claire Byrne were also on the guest list.

Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media Catherine Martin was also spotted with her husband Francis Noel Duffy and Minister Eamon Ryan and his daughter.

Adapted from his best-selling memoir of the same name, this highly anticipated theatrical event runs until 6 February.

Directed by three-time Emmy award-winning director Lonny Price, and produced by Landmark Productions and Lovano, the creative team also includes Sinéad McKenna (set and lighting designer); Joan O’Clery (costume designer) and Sinéad Diskin (sound designer).

As a young boy growing up on the outskirts of Dublin, Gabriel Byrne sought refuge in a world of imagination among the fields and hills near his home, at the edge of a rapidly encroaching city.

Moving between sensual recollection of childhood in a now almost vanished Ireland and a commentary on stardom in Hollywood and on Broadway, he returns to his home town to reflect on a life's journey.

By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, Walking with Ghosts is a lyrical homage to the people and landscapes that ultimately shape our destinies.

Tickets from €26 including a €1 restoration levy. Additional booking fees may apply.
