Joe Dean Wins Dramatic Open Last-Chance Qualifier To Seal Final Place At Royal Birkdale

Joe Dean won the inaugural Open Last-Chance Qualifier by a single stroke at Royal Birkdale to claim the final place at The 154th Open Championship later this week.

155 places were locked in ahead of Monday's inaugural qualifier, with only one place up for grabs from a field of 12.

And it was the former supermarket delivery driver who made the most of the opportunity, signing for a two-under 68 which featured a crucial eagle late on.

Dean faced significant pressure from fellow Englishman Andrew Wilson and 21-year-old South African Aldrich Potgieter throughout, but the DP World Tour pro held firm across the final few holes to maintain his one-stroke lead and book a third career appearance at The Open.

Speaking after his success, the 32-year-old said: "It was great today. Any opportunity to get in The Open again, I'll glady turn up and play.

“One-day events, I seem to play better. I don't quite know why, the mentality of trying to keep the same throughout any round. I don't know if I got used to it a bit more and it was sort of just a one-round shoot-out.

“To see the amount of people out here today, it's been great. I think it has drawn a lot more people.”

With Dean now confirmed to return, the full field at The Open is set and the tee times for rounds one and two have been unveiled ahead of the first round on Thursday.

Live updates from...

HALFWAY THROUGH

Hello and welcome to live updates from the Last-Chance Qualifier, where the 12 players are all around the halfway stage.

It's a tight battle at the top as things stand, with Englishmen Andrew Wilson and Joe Dean tied at the top. All 12 players are separated by just four strokes, however, so there's set to be plenty of twists and turns ahead.

ENGLISH PROS LEAD THE WAY

Joe Dean continues his bogey-free round so far with another par at the 10th. His only birdie so far arrived at the par-3 seventh. Dean remains tied at the top on one-under.

Meanwhile, Andrew Wilson is through 12 holes on one-under following two pars in a row.

Third place belongs to John Gough, the recent HotelPlanner Tour winner who apparently once lost to our own Matt Cradock in junior county golf. Happens to the best of us, John...

Gough, who is on the 11th at the moment, has made par at every single hole so far.

POTGIETER ON THE SLIDE

Aldrich Potgieter was right in contention not too long ago at Royal Birkdale. However, consecutive bogeys have dropped him down to T4th on one-over.

On the flip side, English amateur Sam Easterbrook has made two birdies in a row before a par at the par-4 11th, so he's right back in the mix and riding a wave of momentum.

GREAT RESPONSE

Just as I was writing off his chances, the South African responds with a birdie to rejoin those in third. A birdie three at the par-4 10th leaves him at even par once again, so one stroke behind a potential playoff...

TIGHT AT THE TOP

Seven players are within two strokes at the top currently, and there are still more than six holes to play for the full 12-man field. Plenty can still change here, and we've already seen that with the number of birdies and bogeys across the board so far.

JOE DEAN TO THE SUMMIT

And there's one of those birdies I was talking about! Joe Dean makes a move to the summit with a birdie at the par-4 11th. That takes him to two-under for the day.

Around the same time, John Gough stumbles at the par-3 12th to fall back down to one-over. That's his first non-par of the day!

TWO-SHOT LEAD

It's a big moment for Dean, potentially, as Andrew Wilson bogeys the par-4 13th to slip back to even par. Joe Dean remains at two-under, so he finally has some breathing room in the final third of this inaugural Last Chance Qualifier.

MOLONEY LOOKING TO MOVE UP

American amateur Matt Moloney has responded really well to a double-bogey six at the eighth earlier on. Since then, he's gone one-under through the subsequent five holes and sits patiently in T4th, three strokes back of Dean. He will have to start taking some more chances soon, though, with only one place at The Open on the line...

LATE INCLUSION ON THE CHARGE

Speaking of amateurs, England's Frazer Jones - who was a late inclusion in the field after the withdrawal of Marcus Helligkilde on Saturday - has just made a positive move.

Jones birdies the par-3 12th to join that group on one-over. What a story it'd be if Jones snatched the final Open exemption. He's got work to do still, mind.

MOST BIRDIED HOLE

The most-birdied hole so far today at Royal Birkdale has been the par-4 fifth. Four players made gains there: Andrew Wilson, Charles Huntzinger, Sam Easterbrook (A) and Angel Hidalgo. Unfortunately for the Spaniard, that's been his only birdie so far today.

The fifth hole is only going to play 321 yards at The Open, so we may well see a few more red numbers there this week.

FOUR MAKE MISTAKES

Unfortunately for Wesley Bryan, the American is heading in the wrong direction and might well be out of the running. He bogeys the par-3 12th, but he's not the only one.

After bogeying the same hole just now, Gough makes a double at the par-4 13th and is now at three-over.

Huntzinger and Arnaus also slip up at the 13th, which is proving to be a very unlucky hole for some.

DEAN ESCAPES

Given the carnage going on at this stage, a par for the leader will feel like gold dust. Dean makes his three at the 12th and remains mistake-free for the day.

MOST BOGEYED HOLE

Continuing the theme from earlier, the par-4 eighth hole has proved to be a real toughy for this 12-man field. SEVEN of the players made bogey today.

It's going to play around 460 yards during The Open Championship and could prove to be decisive if we see as high a percentage of the field make bogey. Par on the eighth may well prove to be a gain on the field.

NIGHTMARE FOR ARNAUS

In the first group out, Adri Arnaus is surely already thinking of the clubhouse and which event he has next on the schedule. The Spaniard makes a bogey at the par-5 14th and is now on four over. He is firmly in 12th place.

PRESSURE BACK ON

Well now. Joe Dean isn't quite cut and dried just yet. Andrew Wilson quickly puts that bogey on the 13th behind him thanks to a gain at the par-5 14th.

He's back up to one-under and just a single stroke behind the leader...

FIRST MISTAKE

And the drama continues! Joe Dean has made his first bogey of the day at the 13th. He becomes the sixth player out of the 12 to bogey the par-4 and slips back into a share with the resurgent Wilson.

UNLUCKY 13TH

The par-4 13th has taken some shots today. It goes level with the 8th in terms of welcoming the most bogeys (seven). Aldrich Potgieter makes it out safely with a four, but Angel Hidalgo's bad day becomes worse with a fifth mistake and he's T11th with his fellow Spaniard Arnaus.

Up ahead, Matt Moloney bogeys the par-3 15th to fall down to two-over alongside Charles Huntzinger - probably the best name in this field.

ALL CHANGE AGAIN

Oh Andrew Wilson, what have you done? After making a birdie at the par-5 14th to pull alongside Dean, he's made an immediate bogey at the par-4 15th to fall into a share of second at even par.

Sam Easterbrook is now in that group, too, though thanks to a birdie at the 14th. After starting with a double at the first, the amateur is within one of Dean courtesy of three birdies in his past six holes.

STARS ARE OUT ON COURSE

While this fascinating playoff is taking place, those who have already locked up tee times at The Open are practicing on Royal Birkdale's famous links layout.

Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, Cam Young and Patrick Cantlay have all been snapped already this morning.

WHAT A DAY FOR THE AMATEURS

Frazer Jones jumps up into a share of second at even par thanks to a birdie at the par-5 14th. That's his second in three holes. What a time to find some momentum!

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED

Is that the moment Joe Dean seals his Open Championship place? The Englishman eagles the par-5 to move three ahead. That's the first eagle from anyone today, and it's potentially helped the former grocery store worker seal his fate.

HUNTZINGER SLIPPING AWAY

It doesn't look good for Huntzinger now after a second bogey in three holes. The American made errors at the 13th and 15th to slide back to three-over - six strokes off the lead with only three to play.

RARE BIRDIE

It's been a rotten day for Adri Arnaus, but the Spaniard finally puts some red on the board at the par-4 16th. A three there lifts him into a share of seventh (+3) and leaves Hidalgo stranded alone at the foot of the leaderboard.

POTGIETER INTO SECOND

The par-5 14th is proving to be a very fruitful hole for gains, and there are two in the marquee group out there today.

Wesley Bryan holes out first to move into a share of sixth on two-over, but the more significant develop relates to Aldrich Potgieter.

The one-time PGA Tour winner makes a four to cut Dean's advantage to just two shots. He's solo second now on one-under with four holes to play.

DEAN MISTAKE

Just when we thought it might have been over, Joe Dean follows in Andrew Wilson's footsteps by bogeying the par-3 15th.

Dean has now gone bogey-eagle-bogey but remains top by one stroke. He only has three holes to navigate, though.

JONES MAKES ERROR

Jones drops out of the group in a share of second after a bogey at the devilishly tricky par-3 15th hole. The English amateur is now solo fifth on one-over, so three shots back of Dean.

Elsewhere, Hidalgo draws himself up into T8th thanks to a birdie at the par-5 14th.

DROPPING OFF

Easterbrook follows Jones in making a bogey at such a crucial juncture. The other English amateur drops a shot at the par-4 16th which might well spell the end of his chances...

NOW OR NEVER

Wilson adds a par to his scorecard at the par-4 16th, leaving him two off the lead with two to play. It's now or never for the English pro!

And what a moment for Wilson at the 17th! He's made birdie to give himself a chance of a playoff at least down the 18th.

Matt Moloney also adds a red number at the 17th, but he is now on one-over so looks as though he'll come up short.

BRUTAL PAR-3

The par-3 15th hasn't given up a red number for any of the 12 players in this Last-Chance Qualifier, but it has given out some bogeys.

Hidalgo and Bryan are victims of the tough short hole while Potgieter escapes with an excellent par, all things considered.

Seven bogeys and five pars on that hole today. Potgieter remains within one of Dean.

DEAN HOLDS FIRM

Joe Dean holds firm at the top with a steady par at the 16th. Down below, Matti Schmid and John Gough both birdie the same hole. It's not likely to affect this qualifier, however, with our attention remaining firmly fixed on the top three as it stands.

WILSON SETS CLUBHOUSE TARGET

What a round from Andrew Wilson, who sets the clubhouse target with a one-under 69. He could only par the last, but a birdie at the par-5 17th may have given him a chance of a playoff at the very least. We shall see shortly...

POTGIETER CAN'T CLOSE THE GAP

At the 16th, which has been quite frugal in terms of birdies today, Potgieter is forced to settle for par and must find something on the 17th or that might be it for him, you'd have thought.

DEAN RETAINS LEAD

Joe Dean makes a five at the 17th, helping him stay one shot ahead going down the last. However, he's not in the final group, so Potgieter could still snatch this with a remarkable finish.

Dean -2

Potgieter -1

Wilson -1 (69)

Meanwhile, it looks as though the two English amateurs will come up short despite putting in excellent displays, respectively. Sam Easterbrook is home in 71 while Frazer Jones heads down the last now.

DEAN V POTGIETER V WILSON

With the final groups heading for home now, there are three players truly in contention for the final Open Championship exemption.

Joe Dean leads on two-under and is on the 18th as we speak. Aldrich Potgieter is one back but on the scoreable 17th, and Andrew Wilson is already in the clubhouse on one-under.

Who would you rather be at this stage? I'd say there's a strong claim to be any of the three. This is so tense!

OFF TO 18!

In the final group, Angel Hidalgo makes bogey at the par-5 17th. Wesley Bryan finds a five, and Aldrich Potgieter... also only makes par!

The South African now only has three strokes over the next 508 yards to give himself a chance. Luckily for him, he absolutely sends it off the tee.

JOE DEAN SETS CLUBHOUSE TARGET

Oh that is sensational from Joe Dean! The Englishman holds his nerve brilliantly out of a greenside bunker at the 18th to ultimately make a par and set the clubhouse target with a 68. What have you got in response, Aldrich Potgieter?

NOT LOOKING GOOD FOR POTGIETER

Potgieter needs a birdie to force a playoff, but the chaser's tee shot is a poor one as it finds the left rough. And with a 508-yard par-4 to contend with, you don't want to be hitting your approach from that - even if you can mash it an absolute mile.

BUNKER MIRACLE REQUIRED

Potgieter sends his ball from the left rough and into one of the revetted bunkers which surrounds the 18th at Royal Birkdale. The equation is simple - hole out or go home.

JOE DEAN WINS THE OPEN LAST-CHANCE QUALIFIER

Potgieter can't find the hole with his bunker shot and Joe Dean is crowned the champion of The Open Last-Chance Qualifier. What a moment for the former supermarket delivery driver!

He wins the inaugural version of what I really hope will become a long-standing tradition of The Open. That was great!

POTGIETER MAKES FINAL-HOLE BOGEY

Pushing to make something happen, the 21-year-old South African found himself in all sorts of trouble at the last and ultimately walks away with a bogey.

That sees him finish in solo third on even par, two shots behind the victorious Joe Dean, who now needs to make hasty plans for the remainder of this week!

THE OPEN FIELD IS SET

That's that then. The full 156-man field for The 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale is set.

Joe Dean was the final man in, and with a full-intensity 18-hole practice round under his best, who knows what he might now be capable of for the rest of the week.

Scottie Scheffler and co. are already on site, beavering away as they fine tune their games before Thursday.

Scheffler remains among the betting favorites for The Open in 2026, despite his rare missed cut in Scotland, while Dean might well find himself a little lower down the pecking order. It matters not, though, because everyone starts on 0 come round one.

DEAN'S OPEN TEE TIME CONFIRMED

The full list of tee times are not yet out for The Open, but we do know when Joe Dean is teeing off on Thursday already.

He is due to play alongside 2016 Champion Golfer Henrik Stenson and Max Homa, with the trio out in game four at 7:08am.

Check back in with Golf Monthly in roughly 90 minutes for the full list of round one and round two tee times for The 154th Open Championship.

WHAT A WEEK FOR JOE DEAN

Not only did Joe Dean qualify for The Open today, he did it with his fiancee Emily on the bag. But she won't be his fiancee for long... because they're getting married next Tuesday!

Imagine if England won the World Cup on Sunday after he lifts the Claret Jug as well. A man can dream.
