US President Joe Biden invited thousands to celebrate at the White House on Tuesday as he signed new gay marriage legislation. Politicians from both parties attended, as did first lady Jill Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, to mark the passing of the Respect for Marriage Act.
"This law and the love it defends strike a blow against hate in all its forms," Mr Biden said on the South Lawn of the White House. "And that’s why this law matters to every single American.
"Racism, antisemitism, homophobia, transphobia, they’re all connected. But the antidote to hate is love."
