Joe Allen to be handed iconic shirt number for Swansea City return

Joe Allen is expected to wear the number seven shirt in his second spell at Swansea City.

The Welshman travelled to Swansea on Thursday with a view to officially sealing a return to his former club today (Friday). And it's understood he will be handed the number seven jersey - the same number worn by Swans midfield legend Leon Britton - for the 2022/23 campaign.

Allen is expected to sign a two-year deal with the Swans and will become the club's fourth new recruit of the summer following the arrivals of Nathan Wood, Matty Sorinola and Harry Darling.

Allen - who racked up 150 senior appearances in his first spell with the club - was handed his Swansea debut in May 2007, with Roberto Martinez's men losing 6-3 to Blackpool on what was the final day of the 2006/07 campaign. He wore the number 24 shirt during his first spell at the club, the same number he had at Liverpool while he has already had the number seven jersey with Wales.

The number seven shirt is currently up for grabs following the departure of Korey Smith this summer. It was previously worn by club legend Alan Curtis.

Allen's impending arrival comes following the departure of Flynn Downes who has sealed a move to West Ham United. The midfielder had been expected to secure a switch to Crystal Palace, although the Hammers matched their offer, with Downes opting to join the club he supported as a boy.

It's understood Downes departed for a fee of £9m in a deal which could be worth around £14m with add-ons. He has signed a five-year contract with David Moyes' side while the Premier League outfit hold the option to extend that deal by a further 12 months.
