Watford chiefs are suggesting that Newcastle United had a bid in the region of £20million for Brazilian youngster João Pedro turned down tonight.
The 20-year-old's agent has strong links with sports agency empire Bertolucci Sports who brought Bruno Guimaraes to United in January. But the Hornets, who have just lost Emmanuel Dennis to Nottingham Forest, have insisted they don't want to sell.
With just over two weeks left of the window that could also be a rough translation in transfer speak to bid higher. However, Newcastle are getting used to clubs cranking up prices on targets after walking away on some deals this summer.
Pedro has scored one goal in three matches since Watford were relegated from the Premier League. The youngster netted just four goals in the Premier League last season including an equaliser against Newcastle at St James' Park.
His best tally in England came when he scored nine times in the Championship. Pedro arrived in the UK from Fluminense three years ago as a raw talent.
The player's agent was approached for comment but refused to confirm or deny the bid for Pedro after Sky Sports first reported the bid.
