With its glittering, embroidered roots and its hand-made sparkling leaves, the "Tree of Life" is an homage to two inspiring women: Catherine de Medicis and the nymph of Greek legend, Daphne. Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos tells us about devising her latest installation in a world paralysed by the pandemic, when she forged artistic and community connections thanks to traditional crafts, aided by technology. She also discusses the feminist fibre at the centre of all of her work – from fashion shows to large-scale exhibitions – and how inequality and human rights inform the sculptures she makes.
