Star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown recently signed a historic supermax contract extension worth $304 million over five seasons after becoming eligible for it due to his All-NBA nod last season, and even before the ink was dry, fans and analysts began to critique the deal.
On a recent episode of the “Old Man and the 3” podcast, host JJ Redick discussed Brown’s supermax extension in the context of the wider NBA, addressing the sticker shock of the contract value for many, the intention of the supermax contract in the collective bargaining agreement and its impact on the league’s middle-class players.
Specifically, the intention of the supermax was to retain top-tier players, but it has resulted in players like Brown and others signing record contracts without being top-five players in the league.
