Jimmy Garoppolo’s tenure with the San Francisco 49ers has likely ended in the most fitting way possible: with an incredibly ugly and very unnecessary interception.
On Sunday, the 49ers lost to the Rams 20-17 in the NFC Championship Game after holding a 10-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. A big reason for the swing in momentum is the play of the two quarterbacks, with Matthew Stafford thoroughly outplaying his counterpart in Garoppolo in the final 15 minutes.
With less than two minutes on the clock and the game in his hands down by three, Garoppolo had the chance to change the narrative and lead the 49ers on a game-tying — or game winning — drive. Instead, Garoppolo threw the most unnecessary interception of all time to end San Francisco’s Super Bowl hopes.

Instead of taking the sack with one timeout left or throwing the ball away, Garoppolo tried for the hero play with a wild toss that tipped out of the hands of JaMycal Hasty and into the hands of Travin Howard.
Seriously, this is an interception that’d make Carson Wentz proud.

When it mattered, Garoppolo just wasn’t good enough for the 49ers. He got outplayed in the fourth quarter by Stafford — the Rams’ quarterback went 11-14 for 121 yards and a touchdown while Garoppolo went 3-9 for 30 yards and that game-ending interception.
And if Garoppolo’s past fourth quarter playoff performances are any indication, the 49ers will continue to tread water if he stays in San Francisco.
#49ers Jimmy Garoppolo went 3 for 9 for 30 yards and INT in 4th quarter. In 6 playoff starts Garoppolo has a 28.0 passer rating in the 4th, ranking last among 69 QBs w/ 30+ 4th quarter passes in playoffs since 1991

All signs point to this being Garoppolo’s last game with the 49ers and boy was it ever the most fitting way to go out.
