Jharkhand: Stage set for second phase of panchayat polls today

RANCHI: The second phase of three-tier panchayat elections will be held in the state on Thursday as the poll-bound districts dispatched teams to booths on Wednesday amid tight security.

The polls will be held in 12,648 seats across 872 panchayats in 50 blocks in 16 districts. Of this, 5,093 seats have already been won unopposed by aspiring candidates owing to lack of any opponents, stated an official communication from the state election commission (SEC).

As many as 29,049 candidates have filed their nominations for different posts namely panchayat members, mukhiyas, panchayat committee members as well as for zilla parishad.

“Voting will begin at 7 am through ballot papers and conclude at 3pm,” said an official of the poll commission. All poll-bound panchayats and districts are ready for peaceful conduct of the elections, he added. In the first phase too, elections remained peaceful.

As per the details from SEC, more than 38.82 lakh voters are eligible to cast their votes. As many as 10,614 polling booths have been set up of which 8,151 are classified as sensitive and highly sensitive ones.

Counting of votes for the first phase of polls which began on Tuesday concluded on Wednesday. Certificates to the winning candidates were also issued. In the first phase, voting was held in 1,127 panchayats in 21 districts for 16,757 posts.
