Jewellery heist in Mumbai: Four nabbed from Rajasthan

MUMBAI: The Pydhonie police have arrested four men from Rajasthan for looting valuables worth Rs 44.5 lakh from a jewellery shop’s employee in Kalbadevi area.

Those arrested include Krupal Singh (23), Avtar Singh (24), a graduate, Mugsingh alias Indra Singh (24) and Aakash Singh( 27), all residents of Jalore district in Rajasthan. They were produced before a court and have been remanded in police custody till August 1. One of the accused is the son of a former pradhan of a village in Jalore.

The robbery took place on the night of July 23 at Kalbadevi. The employee, in this case the complainant, worked in a jewellery shop at Bhuleshwar. He was carrying gold biscuits and ornaments and was on his way to his employer’s second shop in Kalyan. Soon, the four accused started following him. As soon as he reached a narrow lane, the robbers accosted him.

“One accused held the complainant’s mouth, while another one pinned his hands down, and the third kept a close watch on him. Then, they snatched the bag from him and fled,” said an officer.

Soon after the FIR, SPI Shrikant Rajarampatil and inspector Kaleem Shaikh formed three teams to nab the culprits. While a team was working on the CCTV footage, it called the victim, his employer and others working in their office to see if they knew any suspect. This is when the jewellery shop’s manager identified one of the suspects as his brother-in-law. A team comprising officers Nitin Jadhav, Sankalp Mokal, Arun Jadhav, staffer Irfan Khan and colleagues, then left for Rajasthan to trace the accused. The police team had got leads about the accused from their mobile numbers which they got from the dump data and technical intelligence, CDR etc. The accused had sold some jewellery to get cash, said an officer.

The investigators found that the manager's brother-in-law had visited Mumbai last month and visited the victim's shop, met his brother-in-law, sat there and observed how the jewellery market functions. The accused had carried out a recce twice before the crime.

"We have arrested the accused and recovered more than 90% of the robbed jewellery," said zonal DCP Neelotpal.
