Jets GM Joe Douglas Non-Committal About Future Plans for Zach Wilson

Once again, the New York Jets find themselves back at the drawing board to figure out the future of the franchise after registering another disappointing season.

Although the Jets concluded the 2023 campaign with a 17–3 victory against the New England Patriots in Week 18, New York ended the season 7–10 and registered its eighth consecutive losing season. One of the franchise’s biggest offseason questions is the future of quarterback Zach Wilson.

The obvious plan for the Jets is to have Aaron Rodgers fully healthy as the starting quarterback for next season. When Jets general manager Joe Douglas was asked if Wilson would be a part of the franchise moving forward, he shared a very reserved response.

“I had a good conversation with Zach and I can assure you when it comes to Zach, I’m not going to go into the specifics of our conversation, but we’re going to do what’s right for the team,” Douglas said. “We’re going to get together after these player exit interviews and get with the staff and put our game plan together for the offseason.”

Asked directly if he was open to trading Wilson, Douglas implied that he was. “You guys know that if the phone answers, I’m going to pick it up. But I don’t have a crystal ball into what exactly is going to happen here in the future.”

Douglas’s latest comment aligns with a report from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini on Sunday that the Jets are expected to trade Wilson this offseason. This season, Wilson was benched multiple times and considered the moments very “frustrating.”

In three seasons, the 24-year-old has registered a 12-21 record as a starter and thrown for 6,293 yards, 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions while completing just 57% of his passes. Wilson didn’t play in the Jets’ season finale due to a concussion, resulting in Trevor Siemian getting the starting nod.
