Jets Fire General Manager Joe Douglas

The New York Jets have fired general manager Joe Douglas, SNY NFL Insider Connor Hughes reported on Tuesday.

Joe Douglas Out With The Jets

Douglas is out as the Jets’ general manager one month after Woody Johnson fired head coach Robert Saleh. Phil Savage has been promoted to interim GM.

The team later released a statement about Douglas’ dismissal.

“Today, I informed Joe Douglas he will no longer serve as the general manager of the New York Jets,” Johnson said. “I want to thank Joe for his commitment to the Jets over the last six years and wish him and his family the best moving forward. Phil Savage will be the interim general manager for the remainder of the season. We will begin the process to identify a new General Manager immediately.”

Johnson was in the final year of his six-year contract he signed in June 2019. Instead of waiting until the end of the year for his contract to expire, Johnson pulled the trigger on removing Douglas with the Jets on their bye week.

The Jets went 30-64 during Douglas’ tenure and failed to qualify for the postseason every year. This season, the Jets are 3-8 and have been a massive disappointment.

Douglas’ best achievement came in the 2022 NFL Draft when he selected Sauce Gardner, Garrett Wilson, Brece Hall, and Jermaine Johnson.

However, Douglas’ decision to select Zach Wilson as the No. 2 pick in the 2021 draft was one of the driving forces in his downfall. Plus, the Aaron Rodgers experiment has been a disaster.

The Jets have gone 1-5 under interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich.

Jets Searching For New Coach And GM

By firing Douglas before the season ends, the Jets get a jumpstart on finding a new head coach and general manager.

At 3-8, the Jets will now embark on a complete rebuild. Expect names like Mike Vrabel, Bill Belichick, Ben Johnson, Brian Flores, and Matt Nagy to be thrown around as potential head coaching replacements.

The new coach and GM will have a decision to make with Rodgers. Do they enter the 2025 season with Rodgers as the starter, or do they wipe the slate clean and enter next year with a new quarterback?
