Jesse Marsch opens up on Leeds United's striker pursuit and alternative options

Jesse Marsch has opened up on Leeds United’s search for an attacker with just three weeks remaining in the summer transfer window. The Whites have been busy this summer, bringing in eight players and strengthening in a number of positions across the park.

However, despite recognising the need to bolster their forward ranks, so far they have been unable to land someone capable of leading the line. Charles De Ketelaere was the club’s number one attacking target, but their hopes of adding the Belgium international were ended when he penned a long-term deal with AC Milan.

As such, Leeds are still on the lookout for a striker, but Marsch insists they will only move to sign a player if they are confident he is the right man.

“Obviously we've said a long time that we've been evaluating for the right striker,” Marsch said. “But Patrick (Bamford) being fully fit obviously helps us in that area. We also have some flexibility with Rodri who can play there and Dan (James) can play there at times.

“I think that we know that we have to add. With Mateo (Joseph), with Sonny Perkins, we have some young strikers and obviously Joffy (Joe Gelhardt) but Joffy I consider part of the first group.

“We have some good young strikers so a lot of it is also trying to look at from a profile of what age we want and we don't want to suffocate some of the young players having opportunities moving forward in the next one to three years. So it's trying to find the right age profile and the right player profile and most importantly the right person to come into the team.

“A striker, that's not so easy. That's not so easy. The way that I like to play the game we ask a lot from the strikers to work hard to press so it's a very demanding position in the way that I like to play. So we're trying to find the right one.”
