Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has admitted that he would not be comfortable in signing Odell Beckham Jr without a workout with the team.
It comes after the superstar wide receiver tore his ACL in last year's Super Bowl - where he scored a touchdown for the Los Angeles Rams on their way to winning the ring - ruling him out for now over 11 months. Beckham Jr could not agree a deal to return to the Rams, and remains an unsigned free agent heading into the final weeks of the NFL season.
Like last year, Beckham will be a free agent to join a contender, after his release from the Cleveland Browns allowed him to join the Rams. Beckham met with the Dallas Cowboys on Monday, but did not workout with the team, with fears on his health moving forward this season. This has Cowboys owner Jones worried, and admitted that the signing may be in some doubt.
Speaking to Tuesday’s 105.3 The Fan show, Jones said: "I’m not confident at all. And, so, that’s the issue. Now, we all realize that issue of health, that issue of availability is here every time. Just this one is very obvious and very pointed toward his injury that occurred last year in the Super Bowl.
"You got a lot of history here and you can take a good look at, not only the obvious and that’s his performance, but also any issues regarding health. So, all of this we got to come in with our eyes wide open and it has to be addressed, and that’s when you can see if you can make a deal or not."
Jones would go on to admit that they are exploring their options at the current state, before acknowledging a deal to sign the 30-year-old is not close.
He added: "By no means are we at a position to say, ‘close,’ or where we are. We’re just discussing the many options that are there."
Jones also had concerns that Beckham may not play again this season, with his team very much in 'win now' mode, as they are currently among the betting favourites to win the Super Bowl.
Beckham was seen at a Dallas Mavericks game later that night, alongside Cowboys stars Micah Parsons and Trevon Diggs, in which fans had been chanting his name, in an attempt to convince him to join the team.
Remaining unsigned though, his former team New York Giants remain in the picture to sign him, after he reportedly met with them last week. Beckham spent his first five seasons with the Giants, and played his best football in New York. The Giants currently have their best team that they've had in years, and look primed to compete in a weakened NFC conference, under new head coach, offensive-minded Brian Daboll.
The Buffalo Bills also remain in the picture to sign Beckham, who he reportedly met with last week.
