The New England Patriots coaching staff could potentially look different in 2023, and one name to watch is Jerod Mayo, who could be on the move in a new capacity.
Mayo has been a hot name in coaching circles since he began to do so in 2019. He’s been on several head coaching interviews with teams over the course of his brief coaching career. He has also not been shy about wanting to be a head coach.
ESPN’s Kimberley A. Martin reported earlier on Monday that Mayo could be a candidate for the Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator job. It would be a logical progression, as Mayo has served as an inside linebackers coach under Bill Belichick these past four seasons.
The Browns fired defensive coordinator Joe Woods on Monday, and it was later confirmed they had requested permission to interview Mayo.
The Cleveland Browns, who relieved defensive coordinator Joe Woods of his duties, requested permission today to interview Patriots’ inside LB coach Jerod Mayo for their defensive coordinator job, per source.

Losing Mayo would leave a big hole in the Patriots’ defensive staff. This could be one of the bigger moves of the offseason, as assistant coaching turnover is expected to take place.
