New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo sidestepped a Drake Maye-related question when appearing on “The Greg Hill Show” on Monday.
The question came a day after Jacoby Brissett struggled under center for the Patriots against the Seattle Seahawks. He went 15-of-27 on the afternoon, throwing for 149 yards in total.
The offense struggled to pass the ball in the second half, as Brissett threw for 32 yards in total. He was also hit six times in the second half.
Mayo was asked if Maye’s extended reps at practice are potentially “building toward something soon.” With many wanting to see the rookie No. 3 overall draft pick get a shot, Mayo is instead focusing on the Jets, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Adam London.
“For me, I’m focused on the Jets,” Mayo said. “I’m not looking that far out. As an organization, we’re still 100% behind Jacoby.”
This could be a conversation worth having sooner rather than later.
The raw skill set Maye brings to the table and the optimism he brings fans may be something the coaching staff should consider. However, they are solely focused on Thursday night’s game for now.
