New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo had an update on the quarterback battle between Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye on Monday.
The coach indicated on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” that the rookie has outplayed the veteran on the football field. He also claimed the team would consider the full body of work, including the spring, when making a final decision on the quarterback position.
Maye has certainly looked the part, and Sunday night’s preseason finale was the icing on the cake. Brissett got hurt during the loss to the Washington Commanders, and it gave Maye a chance at extended action. The former North Carolina star went 13-of-20 passing for 126 yards and a touchdown.
By comparison, Brissett has thrown for 36 yards and an interception in the entire preseason. He went 2-of-4 passing on Sunday for only 19 yards.
“What I will say this is a true competition and I would say at this current point, Drake has outplayed Jacoby,” said Mayo, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “Now in saying that, we have to take in the full body of work, going all the way back to the spring and beginning of training camp. And we’ll see where we end up. But those are the conversations that will happen here over the next couple of days.”

It’s still a bit surprising that Mayo has been so very open about the quarterback battle to this point. One has to wonder how the battle itself will play out with the season opener only two weeks away.
