Jeremy Clarkson under fire after saying £6.50 pints are too expensive - when The Farmer's Dog charges even more

Jeremy Clarkson has received backlash for complaining about the average price of a pint - when he charges more in his own pub.

The broadcaster, 65, has owned the hugely successful The Farmer’s Dog pub in the Cotswolds since 2024. And he also has his own brand of beer and ciders, Hawkstone.

Clarkson has been vocal about the difficulties of running a hospitality business, and when one user on X complained about the current cost of a pint, Clarkson was prompted to respond.

“Without pubs, Britain ceases to be Britain,” they wrote.

“The trade lost these ‘daily’ customers, and replaced them with people who used the pubs for occasional use for food.

“The OAP's went. Then Covid taught people to drink at home. The habit was lost. £6-7 a pint works in cities, but not in the sticks.”

Clarkson replied: “I don't think the £6.50 pint works anywhere. It's ludicrous.”

But a community note soon appeared on the post, pointing out the cheapest price for an alcoholic pint at The Farmer’s Dog is £6.75.

“The cheapest price for an alcoholic pint in The Farmer's Dog, the pub owned by Jeremy Clarkson is £6.75 according to their own menu,” the note read.

“You're having a laugh jezza! I paid over 7 quid at your place with your own ale in a plastic cup,” one replied.

Another added: “You might want to tell YOUR pub then.”

Though there were some in the comments defending the star, as one added: “His tweet doesn’t mean he agrees with the prices set in his pub, it’s probably taxation and everything else that bolsters the price up. It probably don't generate that much profit.”

The Standard has contacted a representative of Clarkson for comment.

Last year, Clarkson barred more than 400 Labour MPs from the establishment in protest at the government's tax raid on hospitality.

The Clarkson's Farm star banned Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer from The Farmer's Dog when it opened.

And in December, the 65-year-old extended the boycott to Sir Keir's entire party after his annual business rates bill increased from £28,000 to over £50,000.

“I was well ahead of the curve when I banned Starmer. Every Labour MP is barred now,” he told The Sun.

“Our annual business rates have gone up astronomically from something like £28,000 to well over £50,000. It is a disgrace.”
