Jennifer Lopez is undoubtedly the queen of the romantic comedy. From Maid in Manhattan and Monster-In-Law to recent (underrated) hits like Marry Me and Shotgun Wedding, the multi-hyphenate has dominated the genre for over two decades.
Now, she’s returning to the realm that helped elevate her to superstardom — but this time, with a major twist.
Office Romance, written by Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein specifically for the actress, is J-Lo’s first R-rated romantic comedy, where she plays a high-powered airline CEO caught in a messy workplace affair with her company’s new lawyer.
Jennifer Lopez & Brett Goldstein spill on raunchy new rom-com
From heavy profanity to explicit on-screen nudity (no, not from either of the leads), there isn’t much that’s off limits in the Netflix film, and it’s clear that the “On The Floor” singer wasn’t afraid to push boundaries.
In fact, she and her co-star Brett revealed to PEDESTRIAN.TV that she actually fought to keep one of the film’s most vulgar scenes, when his character repeatedly drops the C-bomb in front of his colleagues.
“The first draft had all the C-word stuff in it, and then we did a rewrite of the whole film and we took out the C-word stuff, and the only note we got back from Jennifer was, ‘Put the C-word stuff back in, where’s that gone? That was my favourite stuff’,” Brett recalled.
Jennifer is proud to say that the jokes in this film are “a little edgier” and “more adult” than her previous rom-coms, and she remains entirely unfazed by the controversial vocabulary
“I’m someone who has a bit of a potty mouth, who does curse a lot in real life. I try to control myself when I’m on camera — it doesn’t always work,” she laughed. “So it didn’t bother me. There’s really no curse words that can really put me off.”
Yet, despite the film’s explicit nature, the duo admitted there were even more raunchy jokes left on the cutting room floor.
“Ask for the director’s cut,” Jennifer joked, while Brett added, “Release the [Ol] Parker cut!”.
Whether we ever see those extra scenes or not, the film promises plenty of wild moments that will make you never look at office culture the same again.
Office Romance is streaming now on Netflix.
