In a recent Variety interview, Jennifer Lopez revealed that she wouldn't discount the possibility of making another movie with her husband and actor, Ben Affleck. The discussion arose as Lopez reflected on her iconic movie lines throughout her career, including a famous one from the 2003 film, 'Gigli,' where she and Affleck first met.
Lopez, now 54 years old, reminisced about her initial encounter with Affleck during the film's read-through. She vividly recalled entering the room and spotting him outside, smoking a cigarette. As they conversed for a brief moment, she instantly felt a connection. Throughout the shooting of 'Gigli,' she cherished working with him every day.
At the time they met on the set of 'Gigli,' Lopez was still married to her second husband, Cris Judd. However, she filed for divorce from Judd in July 2002, and shortly thereafter, Affleck and Lopez became engaged. Unfortunately, their relationship encountered difficulties, and they parted ways in January 2004, after filming the movie 'Jersey Girl' together.
Despite their history, the couple recently rekindled their relationship in 2021, ultimately getting married in 2022. When questioned about potential future collaborations, Lopez expressed openness to the idea. She mentioned that if the right project came along, they would love to work together again, given their shared passion for acting.
It's worth noting that 'Gigli' received an overwhelmingly negative response, both critically and commercially. However, it played a significant role in Affleck and Lopez's relationship. Speaking about the film in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in February 2022, Affleck admitted that it helped him understand how external factors can shape the perception of a movie.
Affleck pointed out that during the production of 'Gigli,' the studio focused on the media frenzy surrounding his and Lopez's romance. They decided to capitalize on it by emphasizing their on-screen pairing, expecting it to generate enthusiasm among audiences. However, the film's commercial failure led Affleck to reflect on his career and pursue directing.
Reflecting on that time, Affleck acknowledged that he and Lopez found themselves caught up in the explosion of celebrity journalism. He admitted that it wasn't how he envisioned his career unfolding but rather an unexpected byproduct of their relationship.
Interestingly, in a separate interview, Lopez mentioned her desire to make a sequel to 'Gigli' in a Vogue '73 Questions' video interview from November 2022.
While their past collaboration may have faced criticism and challenges, it seems that both Lopez and Affleck are open to the idea of working together again. Perhaps, with their renewed commitment to each other and their shared love for the craft, a future joint project could be on the horizon. Only time will tell if audiences will have the opportunity to witness this dynamic duo back on the big screen.
