Jeffrey Dahmer's neighbour's frantic warnings over killer's behaviour dismissed by police

Jeffrey Dahmer is one of the most notorious serial killers to have ever lived. Known as the Milwaukee Cannibal or the Milwaukee Monster, Dahmer murdered and dismembered 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991.

Recently, his horrific crimes have been thrown back into the spotlight with the release of Netflix's new drama series, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

Now, Netflix viewers will be able to learn even more about the evil killer as the streaming platform releases The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes, a series of chilling conversations with the killer that were recorded in an attempt to understand his evil motives.

The fictionalised retelling of the serial killer in Netflix's Monster showcased massive negligence from police officials, which allowed Dahmer to continue on his killing spree.

One character in the series who stands out is Glenda Cleveland, who reported repeated concerns about Dahmer to the police.

Here's who Glenda Cleveland was and what happened to her.

Was Glenda Cleveland real?

Glenda Cleveland, who is played by Niecy Nash in Monster, was a real person.

In the Netflix series, Glenda lives in the unit next door to Dahmer, but in real life she lived in the apartment building adjacent to him.

However, it is true that Cleveland did attempt to alert the police to Dahmer's crimes - and had they listened to her, the serial killer could have been stopped two months earlier.

On May 27, 1991, Glenda's daughter Sandra Smith and her niece Nicole Childress had spotted a naked boy attempting to flee from Dahmer's home.

They called the police, but when they arrived the, officers accepted Dahmer's assurance that the boy was his 19-year-old lover and returned him to the apartment.

We now know that the boy was actually 14-year-old Konerak Sinthasomphone, who would go on to become Dahmer's next murder victim.

The women told Cleveland about the incident, who went on to call the police numerous times.

As Glenda asked the police several times that night whether the boy was in trouble, they rebuffed her concerns.

Cleveland then phoned back a few days later after spotting Konerak's photo in a newspaper article about his disappearance, but no one got back to her. She tried again, getting the same result, and then she even tried contacting the FBI, but still got nowhere.

Dahmer would go on to murder five more people, including Konerak, after Cleveland's repeated attempts to warn the police.

Sadly, Glenda Cleveland died in 2011 at the age of 56.

According to her obituary, published in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Glenda's body was discovered by police officers on the floor of her home after neighbours became concerned that they had not seen her for a few days.

Medical examiners ruled that Glenda had a natural death caused by heart disease and high blood pressure.

Her obituary read: "She became a symbol of good at a time of so much bad in our city. She got involved. She tried to help. She spoke a life-or-death truth and was ignored.

"Then she handled the crush of media attention with patience and dignity."

After Dahmer's arrest in 1991, Cleveland was formally honoured by the county board and was called a "model citizen" by Mayor John Norquist.

She also received a number of awards, including one from the Milwaukee Police Department who had ignored her concerns.

Glenda didn't move after the horrors of Dahmer's crimes were revealed and continued to live in the same neighbourhood until 2009, when she moved less than a mile away.

She also stayed in touch with Sinthasomphone family after Dahmer's arrest and even attended one of their son's weddings.
