Jeffrey Archer, the bestselling British novelist and former politician known for books such as Kane and Abel and Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less , has died at the age of 86. His publisher HarperCollins announced on October 5, 2026 that he had died “suddenly and peacefully” at home. His death came a day before the scheduled publication of Adam & Eve , the final novel of his five-decade writing career. Reuters reported that Archer had sold more than 300 million books across 119 countries.
The timing marked an extraordinary end to the career of a writer whose life included enormous commercial success, a political career, scandal, imprisonment and a return to bestselling fiction. Archer had remained professionally active almost until his death and was due to appear at the Cheltenham Literature Festival to discuss his final novel.
