Jeff Hendrick has made the best possible start to his Reading career by marking his debut with his first goal for the club.
The midfielder joined the Royals on a season-long loan from Newcastle United earlier on Tuesday. Just a few hours later he found the net inside 40 minutes in a comfortable 4-0 win over non-league Maidenhead United at Reading's Bearwood Park training ground. Hendrick had an earlier effort cleared off the line but was perfectly positioned at the back post to convert Andy Yiadom’s cross for the opener.
Goals from Tom Ince, Lucas Joao and Connor Wickham completed the rout for the Royals, who registered their second straight win in pre-season. Hendrick spent the second half of last season on-loan at Queens Park Rangers after struggling for game time under Eddie Howe.
He played just 10 minutes in the Premier League during Howe’s reign and made only four appearances in total across all competitions last term. Hendrick was signed on a free transfer from Burnley by Steve Bruce in 2020. He has racked up 391 club appearances across his spells at Derby County, Burnley, Newcastle and QPR respectively.
