Author JD Vance will be the next Republican nominee for the US Senate in Ohio after rocketing past his competition with the help of former president Donald Trump.

Mr Vance, 37, is most widely known for his memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, which recounts his upbringing in Appalachian Kentucky and the rural American culture that he blamed for the problems that affect poorer communities across the region.
