What began as an emotional appeal for money for his minor girl's eye surgery turned into one of the most discussed controversies on X within hours. A user identified as Jay Singh Rathore had claimed that his 12-year-old sister was at risk of losing her eyesight and appealed for small donations to fund her treatment. Within about 24 hours after the appeal, he claimed to have received more than Rs 1.5 lakh from strangers online. He then removed the payment details, saying the family had received more money than required.
But the story changed dramatically after questions were raised about the medical documents shared with the fundraising post. Shroff Eye Centre later issued a public warning saying someone had allegedly created a fake patient record, prescription and estimate using its letterheads. The controversy then moved from fundraising posts to lengthy X Spaces, where Rathore faced questions from users and donors. Here is what happened.
What did Jay Singh Rathore post?
The original post, which has since been deleted, presented Rathore as a 16-year-old boy seeking help for his younger sister. According to the post, he claimed that his 12-year-old sister had glaucoma and vitreous haemorrhage, and that the family had already spent more than Rs 2.5 lakh on her treatment. He said they had managed to arrange around Rs 50,000 through savings and relatives but still needed money for the next surgery. He appealed to people to contribute even Rs 10 or Rs 20.
