Thomas Sorensen believes appointing Javi Gracia on a short-term deal will provide them with an opportunity to bring in their ideal candidate in the summer.
The former Watford boss arrives at Elland Road on a 'flexible contract' and has 15 games to keep the Whites in the Premier League.
Leeds missed out on a number of targets, including Carlos Corberan, Andoni Iraola and Arne Slot, while names such as Ange Postecoglou were also mentioned.
Former Sunderland, Aston Villa and Stoke City goalkeeper Sorensen insists Leeds are 'too good' to go down, and that surviving the drop will put them in a strong position.

"It definitely opens the options up for them," Sorensen told the The GegenPod Football Podcast. "The first priority is to stay in the Premier League then you can reassess at the end of the season.
"Then you can go after; there was [Andoni] Iraola from Rayo Vallecano, there was [Carlos] Corberan from West Brom depending on if they get promoted.
"You might have some different options and you might actually be able to get the guy that you actually wanted in the first place. Someone like [Ange] Postecoglou would be immense.
"That's the situation he would want to go into where you have a full season in the Premier League, you have a summer to shape the squad and try to put your stamp on the culture and everything around it.
"If Leeds stay in the Premier League, it would put them in a very good spot. I think Leeds are going to stay up, this will turn a corner. Looking at their squad it's too good compared to some of the others."
