Jason Moloney world-title fight confirmed

The first domino in Moloney twins Jason and Andrew's world-title chase has fallen, with the former's WBO bantamweight shot locked in.

Promoter Top Rank confirmed on Thursday the No.1 contender will fight big-punching Filipino Vincent Astrolabio in Stockton, California, on May 13.

They will fight for the vacant title on a card headlined by a WBO middleweight world-title clash between Janibek Alimkhanuly and Steven Butler.

And it could be just the tip of the iceberg for the Moloney family.

While still to be confirmed by Top Rank, AAP understands Jason's twin brother Andrew will earn his own world-title shot on the blockbuster Devin Haney-Vasiliy Lomachenko card a week later in Las Vegas.

Jason Moloney (25-2, 19 KOs) has lost two previous world-title fights, the first a split decision to Emmanuel Rodriguez in 2018 before he was stopped by Japanese pound-for-pound king Naoya Inoue in 2020.

He's won all four bouts since then, including a third-round knockout over another Filipino contender Aston Palicte, to earn his No.1 WBO ranking.

A rift between promoters meant Moloney's WBC bantamweight world-title shot against Nonito Donaire was cancelled earlier this year.

Astrolabio (18-3) is part of fight legend Manny Pacquiao's MP Promotions stable and is ranked No.2 by the WBO.

"On May 13 I will become champion of the world," Moloney said.

"Nineteen years of hard work, countless sacrifices, and complete dedication to the sport all come down to this moment.

"Whatever it takes to have this world championship wrapped around my waist, nothing will stop me."
