Jason McAteer stars in viral Paddy Power video mocking Liverpool's Spice Boy suits

Former Republic of Ireland and Liverpool star Jason McAteer has appeared in Paddy Power 's latest viral video in which the ex-Anfield star casts his mind back to the wardrobe choices of the Spice Boys.

The video has been released by the mischievous Irish bookie to promote the fact that all their customers get a second chance to win with Paddy Power Games.

Liverpool's stars of the 90s picked up the Spice Boys nickname for their off-field flamboyance and exuberance, and the culmination of this phenomenon was when the Reds wore white Armani suits ahead of their FA Cup final against Manchester United in 1996.

Their bright attire certainly lives longer in the memory of the average football fan than their performance on the day as they fell to a 1-0 loss after Eric Cantona notched the all important winner.

McAteer, who played against United on the day, has now appeared in a Paddy Power video in which he ponders how different things might have been had they not worn the showy attire.

The video has been viewed more than 1 million times across Paddy Power's social media channels and sees McAteer introduced by a TV presenter, who asks him if there's any moment in his career where he wished he'd had a second chance.

McAteer ponders the question before drifting into a dream-like state as the footage shoots back to May 1996.

McAteer, dressed in extremely baggy attire, is seen in a suit shop where a tailor tries to twist his arm into selecting the white suit for himself and his teammates for the final.

Unconvinced, McAteer stands across from the tailor in two minds, and the video pans to his inner monologue:

"I’m not sure about these, should I say something? Will the lads think I’m boring?"

McAteer then resolves to hold firm, and an exchange between himself and the tailor goes back and forth.

He asks for a different suit instead before the tailor insists: "Your teammates obviously asked you to pick the suits because you’re the most stylish."

The ex-defender responds: "That's true. But I think we need something more conservative for a Cup Final, show the United lads that all this Spice Boys stuff is a load of rubbish and that we are a serious team. I’m putting my foot down on this. Can you just get us a nice navy one? The white one is not for us."

The tailor turns away and walks out of shot as the camera fades out and a bunch of newspaper headlines appear on screen including: "Pool win the Cup! Smart suits the reason", "Navy suits admired by all" and "McAteer wins the Ballon d'Or".

Liverpool's Spice Boy contingent contained McAteer as well as the likes of Robbie Fowler, Stan Collymore and Jamie Redknapp. A criticism constantly levelled at the group was that their considerable talent was not reflected in terms of trophies, and that the high life off the field was more of a priority.

McAteer himself previously denied claims that the white suits had a bearing on the FA Cup final outcome.

He said: “Everyone will bring up the white suits but a white suit doesn't win a football match.

"The flip argument to that, of course, is that was [Alex] Ferguson's team talk done but at the end of the day we were seven minutes from extra time.

"They were as bad as us and the game could have gone either way."
