The Pittsburgh Penguins’ plans to honor franchise legend Jaromir Jagr during Thursday’s game at PPG Paints Arena have been thwarted by a massive bobblehead heist.
The Penguins announced that the shipment carrying the Jagr bobbleheads, which were meant to be distributed at Pittsburgh’s home matchup against the San Jose Sharks, was stolen in California.
The team has contacted the manufacturer along with state and federal authorities who are working to locate the shipment. The investigation is currently ongoing.
“We were shocked to be a victim of cargo theft, and we are working closely with local and federal authorities on the investigation,” said Penguins executive Kevin Acklin. “While this unfortunate incident adds to the legend of Jaromir Jagr, who will be in attendance as our guest at tonight’s game, we look forward to resolving this theft and delivering the prized Jagr bobbleheads to their rightful homes, with our fans.”
Fans in attendance at Thursday night’s game will receive a voucher that will allow them to pick up a bobblehead of the Penguins icon at a later date to be announced.
The Penguins retired Jagr’s jersey, No. 68, during a special ceremony last month. Jagr, who ranks second in NHL history with 1,921 career points, was drafted by Pittsburgh as the No. 5 pick in 1990 and spent his first 11 pro seasons with the Penguins.
The 52-year-old Jagr is an active player on his hometown team in the Czech Republic, the Kladno Knights, which he also owns.
